Only one largecap fund has given positve return in the last 1 year

Nifty 50 is down 17 per cent from its all time high of 12,430 which was achieved on 20 January, 2020. Nifty 100 Index has dipped by 11.45 per cent and BSE 100 Indes has dropped by 12.21 per cent in the last one year. Other indices have done much worse. In this bear market, where every investor is seeing a fall in the value of portfolio, very few mutual funds have managed to beat the trend. Let us have a look at the large cap mutual funds to see how they have performed in the last one year.

The best performer among the large cap mutual funds is Canara Robeco Bluechip Equity Fund. This is the only large cap fund which has given a positive return in the last one year period. The fund is managed by Mr. Shridatta Bhandwaldar who has over 13 years experience as a fund manager. The fund manager has been quite active in picking and chosing stocks for the portfolio. Reliance Industries tops the list of stocks where the fund has holding. In May 2020, the fund had accumulated more shares of Reliance Industries and added Hero Motocorp, Kansai Nerolac, amd Mahindra & Mahindra to the portfolio. The portfolio consisted of Banks (21.6%), IT Consulting & Software (11.6%), Integrated Oir & Gas (9.3%), Pharmaceuticals (8.4%), and Personal Products (6.2%) as the top 5 sectors. Even though stock prices of Banks have gone down drastically in this period, their fall was cushioned by the stocks of Pharma, Reliance from Oil and Gas sector, IT Consulting & Software, and Personal Products (mainly by Hindustan Unilever). The fund also has significant number of Bharti Airtel and Avenue Supermarts shares in the portfolio.

Canara Robeco Bluechip Equity Fund has not just performed well in 1 year period, it has also done exceedingly well in 3 and 5 years periods too. The fund is the second best performer in 3 and 5 years period behind Axis Bluechip Fund.

The fund was incepted on 29 August, 2010 and has monthly AUM of Rs. 457.39 crore. Expense ratio of the fund is on the higher side as the Expense Ratio (Regular) was 2.55% and for Direct schemes the expense ratio stood at 1.04%. The fund follows S&P BSE 100 TRI as benchmark.

Axis Bluechip Fund is managed by Mr. Shreyash Devalkar who has more than 18 years experience. Axis Bluechip Fund is the best performing large cap fund in 5 and 3 years periods. The fund stands at 3rd position with a return 0f -3.05 per cent in 1 year period. The fund has an amazing combination of stocks in its portfolio. In terms of market value of stocks in the portfolio, HDFC Bank is on the top, followed by Avenue Supermarts. The fund has an amazing combination of a banking stock followed by a consumption stock. Banks constiture 22.8% followed by IT Consulting & Software (13.8%), Pharmaceuticals (8.8%), Department Stores (8%), and Finance including NBFCs (7.1%) of the portfolio. The average monthly AUM stood at Rs. 12493.75 crore as on 31 May, 2020. The expense ration is very low (Direct at 0.44% and Regular at 1.79%).
